Sustainable Biomes Flashcards
What is a Biome?
A Biome is an environment where plants and animals adapt to conditions
What are Earths for spheres?
Lithosphere - the rock
Hydrosphere - the water
Atmosphere - the air
Biosphere - the life
What is an ecosystem?
It is a community of living things that interact with each other and their non living environment e.g as large as a dessert or as small as a puddle
How does weather change?
Weather conditions result from different combinations of 3 factors
Air temperature
Air movement
The amount of water in the air
Isobars
Joins places of same air pressure
The closer together these lines, the stronger the wind
High pressure area
Sinking air
Generally fine weather. Winds rotate around these areas anti clockwise.
Low pressure area
Rising air
Generally cooler weather, rain. Winds rotate clockwise.
Tropical cyclone
Is rapidly rising air
Strong winds, torrential rain.
Cold front
The line along which and approaching mass of cold air meets warmer air.
Falling temperature and rain
Warm front
The line along which and approaching mass or warm air meets cooler air
Temperature rise, sometimes light rain. Uncommon in Australia
Rain
Rain in the last 24 hours
Usually associated with low pressure areas and fronts
Trough
A dip in isobars
An area associated with unsettled weather and precipitation
Humans survive on biomes for survival?
Because biomes are a sources of materials that can be used to produce food, clothing, shelter and energy.
Irrigation is a method if agriculture that is important for the success of crop growing or meat farming.
Irrigation involves the application of water to land or soil and is an ancient agricultural method
How does the climate in a particular place influence farming practices there?
The climate depends on what crops you plant
