Sustainable Biomes Flashcards
What is a biome?
Biomes are communities of plants and animals that spread over a large area, and have adapted to survive their conditions.
Give examples of biomes.
- Savannah
- Polar
- Tundra
- Grasslands
- Marine
- Forest (dry/tropical)
- Desert
How are biomes split?
Biomes are split into two categories - aquatic (water), and terrestrial (land).
What is the relief, gradient and aspect?
Relief - Whether the land is flat or not; variations in land height.
Gradient - The steepness of a slope.
Aspect - The direction a slope faces.
How are biomes and climates interconnected?
The climate of a biome influences plant growth, biodiversity and adaptations of organisms. Climate determines growing seasons and soil quality (terrestrial).
What conditions are generally necessary for food production?
Climate - warm and humid
Topography - Limited extremes, relief and aspect
Fertile soil
Altitude
What is desertification?
The process by which fertile land becomes desert, typically as a result of drought, deforestation, or inappropriate agriculture.
What man-made changes have been made to biomes?
Biological controls/genetic modification
Mining
Deforestation/construction
Desertification
Introduced chemicals
Irrigation
Land reclamation
What environmental changes have been made to biomes?
Climate change
Natural disasters/hazards
Moisture and temperature
List some challenges to food production?
Natural disasters
Pollution
Population growth
Conflict and war
Pests and Diseases
Climate change
How does conflict and war impact food production?
What is the process of land reclamation?
What is food security?
Food security is the availability and accessibility of nutritious foods.
How can we manage food security globally?
Trade, Education and training, mechanization and technology.
How do we achieve food security through sustainability?
Urban farming, drip irrigation, rotational cropping, vertical farming, greenhouses and genetic modification.
