Define Emigration
The process of existing in an area.
Define Immigration
The process of moving into another area with the intention of settling.
Define Migration
The movement of people from one place to another with the intention of settling.
What is the difference between pull and push factors?
Pull factors are a motivating cause which attracts a person to migrate to another country or region. (Positive)
Push factors are a factor which motivates someone to migrate from their country. (Negative)
Which two countries currently have the greatest rural population?
Asia and Africa.
What is a megacity?
An urban area with a population with 10 million people or more.
What are environmental consequences of urbanisation?
Rise of pollution levels, changing land uses (e.g., clearing of trees), and damming of rivers.
What are economic consequences of urbanisation?
Refer to the state of the economy and includes trade relations (boosted), changing industries (become modern) and access to resources.
What are social consequences of urbanisation?
Refer to the relations people have with and within a society. Can include increased crime rates, access to education and wealth.
Describe the two different types of migration.
Forced migration - individuals are forced to leave their homes due to unfavourable conditions. E.g., war, civil unrest, environmental issues.
Chain migration - Begins when one family member migrates, then sends money and documentation to secure the migration of family members to the same place.
Give examples of the consequences from incorporating sustainable urbanisation.
Vertical apartments/living with parents longer - expensive housing although this is a more sustainable alternative.
Food travel time is longer - less fresh produce.
More designing of environmentally friendly housing.
What is internal migration?
The movement of people from one defined area to another within a country.
What is cultural diversity?
Cultural diversity is having a plethora of different ethnicities within a country or region.
Define urbanisation.
The process of people increasingly moving to urban (city) space.
What opportunities are only gained from a city life?
Increased pay,
Healthcare,
Larger communities - cultural diversity and events,
Education,
Fast-paced lifestyle,
Multi-faceted lifestyle.
