Sustainability And Future Development PPQ Flashcards
Discuss link between nation’s ecological footprint and its carbon footprint
Carbon footprint measures total GHG emissions by a person or group mainly as a result of burning fossil fuels
Ecological footprint measures how much land is required to sustain consumption of person / group including food production, waste disposal, energy consumption
Carbon footprint measures one of many factors that are included in ecological footprint
Define and explain concept and measurement of ecological footprint
Based on consumption over a year
Expressed as the amount of land (and sea) required to support use of natural resources
Helps compare use of resources and lifestyles and checking this against natures ability to supply
Explain the concept of one planet living
Studies show a person can have up to 1.84 hectares, however many consume far more (or far less)
One planet living requires everyone to live within this 1.84hectare limit
Explain OPL in relation to developed world
Developed world consumes far more than 1.84 hectares
Measures need to be implemented to reduce this
Eg Reduction in travel both car and plane
Home efficiency
Reduce waste
Name and describe 3 OPL approaches required
Zero carbon: providing green energy
Zero waste: reducing waste production by reusing / not sending waste to landfill
Sustainable transport: encouraging low carbon modes of travel
I=PAT meaning, and role of technology
Environmental impact = population x affluence x technology
How efficiently/harmfully we can produce goods and services : sustainable design
