being able to meet your needs and wants without compromising the lifestyles of future generations.
What is local sustainability?
-making your own clothes
-producing your own food
What is a worldview?
The way we see the world around us and how we perceive fundamental aspects of life.
what is an environmental worldview?
Focuses on the question of what is important: human needs and wants or the overall health of the environment.
Two main environmental worldviews?
-anthropogenic
-biocentric
What is anthropogenic?
Human centered world - humans control the world.
What is expansionist?
-Exploitation of nature/environment are justified because it enables wealth
-environmental/resource issues are fixed with management and technology.
What is Biocentric?
Life centered world - humans are a part of the environment and are one species interacting with every other species.
What is Ecological?
-Recognizes the value of species.
-Humans have no right to interfere with the balance of nature.
what is stewardship?
Adds an ethical perspective to dealing with the environment. Assumes there is a responsibility for humans to take care of the earth as stewards.
What is environmental sustainability?
-Focuses on natural resources ( renewable-water, non renewable-oil)
-need to avoid depleting these resources so they are available for the future
What is social sustainability?
-individuals have to make choices for how they will live
-Hard decisions on how you live and how you want to live.
-do things that are socially responsible(composting, recycling)
what is economic sustainability?
-the economy will suffer in order to be sustainable
-Finding the balance to ensure that people have work, are able to meet there needs, and that we use responsibility is very difficult.
what is Sustainable development?
meeting human development goals while sustaining natural resources needed to meet them.
expansionism
policy where country aims to increase territory/influence through military conquest, colonization, economic dominance.
