Sustainability Flashcards
Sustainable Development
Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the futuregenerations to meet their own needs
What are 3 challenges of investing in more sustainable buildings
- There is no standardized certificate system so it is difficult to compare their monetary value
- For owners and investors, sustainability costs are not equal to the resulting savings
- The high initial cost of buildings
What are the six sustainable design-building life cycle considerations (the 6 Rs)?
Rethink
Refuse
Reduce
Reuse
Repair
Recycle
Features of a sustainable building 5
- solar panels
- rain water collection
- cross ventilation
- regionally sourced materials
- skylights
Scottish Government Statement on Sustainability
By 2045, emissions from transport will be non-existant and emissions from heating, waste, energy, food and industry will be massively diminished
Why was Section 6 of the Building Standard Regulations amended?
To take account of the targets set by the government (addressed building fabrics and fixed building services, and set out a C02 emission standard)
How do we drastically reduce emmissions and energy use?
- improve new building designs
- improve efficinecy of appliances
- use renewable sources of energy
- change our attitudes (cringey)
Who is the greatest person in the world?
Your girlfriend (the flapjack)
Name some new technologies which improve renewable sources of energy (3)
- solar thermal panels
- heat pumps
- wind turbines
What is a fancy name for solar panel electric systems?
Solar photovoltaic (PV)
What is an advantage of solar photovoltaics?
They don’t need direct sunlight to work so they can collect energy on rainy and cloudy days too
What are solar thermal panels also called?
Solar water heaters
What do solar thermal panels do?
Capture sunlight to heat fluid
What is the advantage of biomass?
It avoids carbon emissions by ensuring that trees used for fuel are replaced
How does a heat pump work?
It absorbs the heat from a low energy source (using ground loop) which surrounds the evaporator, raises the temperature and transfers it to storage/distribution
