Building Design Flashcards
What are some criteria to be considered when designing a building? (7)
Function
User Requirements
Performance Requirements
Statutory Requirements
Location
Client
Budget
What modifications do buildings make to our landscape and space? (2)
Climate
How heat is produced, how they create shadows, how they alter wind paths.
Resources
- 35% of the world’s landfills are made up of construction waste.
More than 35 billion tonnes of non-metallic minerals are extracted
How does the existence of Buildings Modify Space (5)
Creates boundaries
Acts as constraints
Restricts passage of matter
Restricts passage of energy
Restricts passage of information
What do we need to make walls? Base Material (5), Components (5), Systems
Base Materials
- Sand + aggregate + water + cement + energy = Concrete
Component
- Brick + concrete block + timber framing + insulation + plasterboard = Wall
Systems
- Joins them together to create buildings
A building as a system. (Wall Purpose) (3 Outside, 1 Middle, 1 Inside)
Outside:
- Wind Barrier
- Water Barrier
- Aesthetic Quality
Middle:
- Act as insulation to prevent heat transfer
Inside
- Aesthetic Quality
Buildings as Spaces (3A, 3D)
Disadavantage:
- Capital Costs
- Running Costs
- Opportunity Costs
Advantage:
- Capital Value
- Use Value
- Production Value
What is body space?
The amount of space occupied by the body. May be expressed as a function of body weight, in 2 dimensions. It is related to posture, which in many cases is dependent on the function of the artifact.
Dynamic / Ergonomic Space
The space required to perform a behavior without a change in position.
Goods / Fixtures and Fittings
Equipment or furniture placed in as behavioral space.
Social Space
Space defined by the needs of one person in the presence of another.
Residual Space
The proportion of behavioral space which cannot be usefully used for functional purposes.
Types of Office Design (2)
Taylorism
- Large rooms with wall to wall tables where people worked directly next to each other.
Bürolandschaft
- Applied organic forms to create something they considered more humane and natural.
Some Additional Features of Office Design (2)
Break Out Spaces
- Places where employees can relax and interact with each other.
Modular Divider Walls
- Creates privacy for employees however isolates them.
Direct and Indirect needs for shelter. (5 Direct, 3 Indirect)
Direct
- Live
- Work
- Leisure
- Medical Care
- Incarceration
Indirect
- Monuments
- Treatment Processes
- Animal Habitats
Human Typology (2, 4 Each)

- Pray Spaces
- Lighting
- Privacy
- Decoration
Culture
- Room layout
- Space requirements
