Sustainability Flashcards
What is sustainable development?
The UN 1987 Brundtland Commission report defined it as “meeting the needs of the present without comprising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
What is radon
Radon gas occurs in certain igneous rocks and soils. It is radioactive and contributes to cancer, over 1000 deaths pa in UK. HSA has a risk map.
What are the foundation types?
- Strip
- Pad
- Raft
What are the 4 load rypes
Dead (fixed)
Live (imposed)
Wind
Snow
Define strength
The ability to sustain load
Define stiffness
The ratio of deformation to associated load level. Push per move.
Define ductility
The amount of inelastic deformation before failure. Keeps its shape.
What does internal and external stability do?
Internal - maintain shape
External- maintain position
Structural elements
Slab
Beam
Column
Walls
Foundations
Tie/strut
Compression v tension
Compression gets shorter.
Tension gets longer (tensile strength).
