achieving NET ZERO CARBON

The Climate Change Act 2008 - amended 2019
requires the UK to achieve ‘net zero carbon’ emissions by 2050
an interim target of reducing carbon emissions by 78% by 2030
a number of REITs and property funds have publicly committed achieving net zero carbon by 2050 under what pledge?
The Better Buildings Partnership (BBP pledge)
The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has a framework addressing the issue which ranks necessary actions in order
for net zero carbon
(5)
What are they?
- establish net zero carbon scope
- across the whole life cycle of a building, eg. construction, use, refurbishment, demolition etc. - reduce construction impacts
- developers need to think about what materials they use and building designs. - reduce operational energy use
- LL should consider how to retro fit and how to work with occupiers to make this happen. BBP ‘design for performance’ initiatives should help with this. - increase renewable energy supply.
LL and developers to consider how to integrate within designs and retrofits - offsetting any remaining carbon
- last resort, eg planting trees, good for biodiversity as well
