Sustainability Flashcards
What are the 6Rs?
Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle
What does the 1st R - Reduce mean?
Reduce – Use fewer materials in the product and packaging, reduce energy during man/use
What does the 2nd R - Re-use mean?
Re-use - use a product again either for same purpose or in another way
What does the 3rd R - Recycle mean?
Recycle – reprocess the materials and turn the product into a new product.
What does the 4th R - Refuse mean?
Refuse – refuse extra packaging
What does the 5th R - Repair mean?
Repair - can the product be repaired rather than buying a new one?
What does the 6th R - Rethink mean?
Rethink – look for a new way to manufacture or dispose of products.
What are Renewable sources? What is another term to describe this?
Non-finite. Resources that can be grown from plants or animals.
What are Non-renewable sources? What is another term to describe this?
Finite. Resources that are used at a faster rate than they can be replaced. But can generally be recycled.
What are examples of Renewable sources?
Wood, Paper, wool, cotton
What are examples of Non-renewable sources?
Oil used to make plastics, metals.
What does biodegradeable mean?
Materials that break down naturally with the aid of rain and sunlight.
What is a carbon footprint?
Is the amount of CO2 or other greenhouse gases emitted during a product’s lifetime, including its
production, use and disposal. Manufacturers should try to minimise these effects by reducing energy use
and cutting down transportation and consumers by careful disposal of the product.
What are greenhouse gases?
Gases such as those produced by burning fossil fuels, which are linked to global warming.
What is fair trade?
A foundation set up to help alleviate poverty and ensure farmers and workers are working under acceptable
conditions and receive a fair price for their goods.
