Sustainability Flashcards
What is sustainable development?
Development that meets the needs of the planet without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
What are the 3 pillars that make up sustainability
Economy
Society
Environment
What is Carbon offsetting
Paying others to reduce emissions/ absorb CO2 to compensate own emissions.
Often involves planting trees or providing technology
What is carbon offsetting inefficient?
- Trees can take up to 20 years to capture amount of CO2 that Carbon offsetting promises
- Carbon stored in trees is not as effective as that stored underground or in peatlands
How long does it take for a tree to capture the amount of CO2 promised by Carbon Offsetting?
up to 20 years
What happens if a tree dies prematurely
Most of the carbon will return to the atmosphere
What 2 approaches can we take to protect biodiversity through sustainability?
- Make people care about environment (reflect how their own lives will be affected through loss)
- Regulations
