survival adaptations and regulations Flashcards
what is a structural adaptation
are a physical feature of an organism like a bill on a bird or the fur on a bear. other adaptations are behavioural.
what are physiological adaptations (functional)
are internal systematic responses to external stimuli in order to help an organism maintain homeostasis. eg bilibys concentrate their urine so they don’t waist water.
what is a behavioural adaptation
are activities that an organism does to help it survive in its natural habitat.
what are adaptations
features that appear to equip an organism for survival
what are blood glucose levels
the levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood
what is biomimicry
is the practice of learning from and being inspired by natures best ideas to achieve technological advances, expressed in new designs, products and processes.
what is homeostasis
maintains a steady state of constancy within the body for certain physiological variables and chemical compositions of body fluids
what is counter current exchange
situation which two fluid systems flowing adjacent to each other, but in opposite directions, enables the transfer of heat or compounds form one system to the other by diffusion.
difference between ectothermic and endothermic
ectothermic is cold blooded (heat from external source)
endothermic is warm blooded (heat for internal self) humans
what is type 1 diabetes
it is an autoimmune disease (illness or disorder that occurs when healthy cells get destroyed by the bodys own immune system) this means it results from the immune system attacking parts of the body. the immune system incorrectly targets the insulin producing beta cells (store and release insulin)
what is type 2 diabetes
The autoimmune systems of people with type 2 DONT attack beta cells. its characterised by the body losing its ability to respond to insulin
what is a tolerance range
environmental conditions in which particular species can successfully live and produce
difference between vasoconstriction and vasodilatation
vasoconstriction is where the vines constrict under the skin to keep in heat and vasodilation veins come closer to the skin to release heat
difference between hypothermia and hyperthermia
hypothermia is where an individual has extreme low body temperature and hyperthermia is where and individual has extreme high body temperature
what is hyperglycaemia
a condition where glucose levels in the blood rise above normal
