What are the different types of surveys and what do they do?

  • Cross sectional: Snapshot from one point in time
  • Cross-lagged: Dependent and independent variable at two points in time ← tells causality
  • Panel: Sampled and recruited, answer questions over time
  • Trend: measures same item with different samples from population each time

What are the different types of survey questions?

A

Open-ended questions, dichotomous (one of two answers) questions, multiple choice questions, likert scales (level of agreement), semantic differential (opposite words) scales, double barrel (2 qs, only 1 answer) questions, negatively worded questions, double negative questions, language bias, funnel (start broad, end narrow), and inverted funnel (start narrow, end broad).
Bad survey questions are leading questions, double barrel questions, framing questions, negative wording and double negative

Face-to-face: leads to richer responses but might be hard to keep tone and questions the same, environment and outside factors affecting
SCQ: Social communication questionare ….
Internet: they are flexible but hard to monitor and response time can vary
