Surveying and denture design principles Flashcards
What are the 3 main parts of a surveyor?
- surveyor tools
- movable arm and tool holder
- adjustable platform
What are the different surveyor tools?
- the analysing rod
- the graphite marker
- the undercut marker
- the chisel
What is the analysing rod used for?
analyses tooth and tissue undercuts and determines the path of insertion for the denture
What is the graphite marker used for?
scribe tooth and tissue undercuts on the model with graphite marker
What is the undercut gauge used for?
measuring desired amount of undercut for the clasp material used
What is the chisel used for?
used to trim the blocked out undercut areas on the model
What is the adjustable platform used for?
the model on the platform may be tilted anteriorly and posteriorly and left and right laterally to determine a suitable path of insertion for the denture
When is there no undercut?
when there is no space between the analysing rod and the tooth
When is there an undercut area?
When there is space between the analysing rod and the tooth
What does the graphite marker do when it is used?
the longer tip of the lead should contact the tooth to create a survey line and establish the broadest part of the tooth and the undercut and non-undercut area of the tooth
What information is gained from a survey line?
- indicates the undercut area on a tooth and non-undercut area
- the type of survey line indicates what retentive component can be used to help retain the denture
What are the different types of survey lines?
- diagonal survey line
- high survey line
- low survey line
What type of clasp is used with a diagonal survey line?
- Occlusally approaching clasp (stainless steel or cobalt chrome)
- the clasp should taper towards the retentive tip of the clasp
- the final third of the clasp is below the survey line and will flex over the tooth and into the undercut area
What type of clasp is used with a high survey line?
- gingivally approaching clasp, as two thirds of an occlusally approaching clasp cannot approach from above the survey line
- positioned on or below the survey line
What type of clasp is used with a low survey line?
- gingivally approaching clasp can be used
- would be less visible than an occlusally approaching clasp
- may be positioned mesial, central or distal
- distal may be more hidden so better aesthetically and is positioned on or below the survey line
