What is a partial denture?
A
a prosthesis that replaces some teeth in a partially dentate arch.
It can be removed from the mouth and replaced at will

What are partial denture made of?
A
usually PMMA (acrylic) or cobalt chromium

Why are partial dentures of use?
A
- appearance
- speech
- mastication
- maxillofacial defects/cleft palate
- prevention of tooth wear
- prevention of unwanted tooth movement
- prevention of lateral tongue spread

What kind of maxillofacial defects may a partial denture be made for?
A
- congenital e.g. cleft palate
- acquired e.g. cancer

What is an obturator?
A
used to block a void caused by a maxillofacial defect - made out of softer material bonded onto the denture
