Surveying Flashcards
Define surveying
It is the art and science of measuring the object on, above and below the earth
Surveying is a fundamental aspect of :
civil engineering, construction, land development etc.
Land surveying involves
measuring and mapping the Earth’s surface including natural and man-made features
land surveyors use various instruments such as
total stations. GPS receivers and drones
these tools help in collecting accurate measurements of
distances, angles and elevations
What are the different types of surveys?
- Boundary surveys
- Topographic surveys
- Construction surveys
- Geodetic surveys
Boundary surveys -
determine property lines and legal boundaries
topographic surveys
map the terrain and features on a site
construction surveys
help guide the construction process by providing precise measurements and layout information
traditional surveying instruments include :
theodolites, measuring tapes, levels
modern techniques utilize :
GPS, laser scanning, drones for remote sensing and data capture
once data is collected in the field, surveyors process it to :
create maps, plans and digital models of the surveyed area
This may involve the usage of :
- specialized software for data processing
- CAD for drafting
- GIS for spatial analysis
application in civil engineering and construction -
essential for site planning and layout
application in land development -
help determining property boundaries, assess terrain, plan infrastructure projects
