Survey Sampling definitions Flashcards
statistics
the measures that the describe the variable of a sample
Parameters
the measures that describe a variable of a population.
probability sample
a sample selected such that every possible sample has a known probability of selection.
simple random sample
students selected at random. every student has the same chance of selection.
stratified random sample
number chosen in each strata is proportional to breakdown population.
cluster sampling
units are divided into clusters. Clusters are sampled randomly. Everyone in a selected cluster is included.
systematic sampling
Select first unit at random. Select every kth unit after that. Every unit has the same chance of selection. However each sample does not have the same chance of selection.
Two stage sampling
In the first stage, a simple random sample of clusters is selected.
In the second stage, a simple random sample is selected from the units in each sampled cluster.
Target population
Population about which you want to make inferences.
Stratification
Ensures an “efficient and population representative sample” Indicators incorporated into analysis.
