Survey Research Methods Flashcards
What is a Questionnaire
A written set of questions (qualitative or quantitative)
What is a survey
a study that includes data collection and analysis
(content, method, analysis)
What is a Cross-sectional survey?
involves analysing information, about a population, at a specific point in time.
What is a longitudinal study
- employ continuous or repeated measures to follow particular individuals over prolonged periods of time
what is probability sampling
random sampling
Non-probability sampling
non-random selection
- convenience (can be bias), purposive, access to difficult-to-reach participants
Sampling error?
when the sample is not representative to the intended population.
What is Respondent Satisficing
When respondents do ‘just enough’ to fulfil the survey request.
What is Social Desirability Bias
When participants adhere to social norms which might influence responses
How can you control Social Desirability Bias
- participant info
- structuring/placing questions
- pay attention to the wording of the statements
What should you consider when designing a questionnaire
- the research questions
- the types of questions
- validity and reliability of questions
What does reliability mean
The consistency of measurement
What does Validity mean
How well a test measures what its actually meant to measure
What is a Dichotomous Scale
A scale with two response options.
Often yes/no
What is an Ordinal Scale
A scale with ordered responses
- Most often a scale of 3,5, or 7
