ANOVA Part 1 Flashcards
Why do we use t-tests
To evaluate whether two means are different
What does ANOVA stand for
Analysis of Variance
Why do we use ANOVAs
To compare more than two factors at the same time or a single factor with more than two levels at the same time.
- Factors can be either…
* Between-subjects: when the IV reflects different participants
* Within-subject: when the IV reflects different observations from the same participant
Why calculate an ANOVA instead of several t-tests
Because we would increase the likelihood of finding a significant difference by chance
What is the Familywise Error Rate?
The family-wise error rate is the probability of one or more false positives when making multiple comparisons
What is a Type I error?
Finding an effect when there isn’t one
What is Type II error?
Not finding an effect when there really is one
What does p<.05 mean
This means that if we find an effect it could have only occurred by chance 5% of the time—5% chance of Type I error
Name one way of correcting for multiple comparisons.
The Bonferroni-correction
