Survey Research and Structured Observation Flashcards
Open Question
respondents can respond however they like
Closed Question
respondents have a set of fixed answers they can choose from
Response Set
if responses are motivated by something other than the persons actual feeling about the items
- multiple-item measures help avoid these from occurring
Vignette Questions
presenting people with one or more scenarios and asking how they would respond
Probing
often observed as repeating the question or the answer choices
Questionnaires
structured interviews without an interviewer
Social desirability Bias
answering questions in a certain manner to present yourself in a better light
Structured Observation
when we observe behaviour directly with explicitly formulated rules to make the observations and to record the information that we gather
Structured Observations avoid:
- Problems of Meaning
- Problems of memory
- Social desirability bias
- Gap between stated and actual behaviour
Observation Schedule
lays out the format and measurements of the structured observation
Recording Incidents
wait until there is a behaviour of interest
Time Period
processes are observed and recorded over a designated period of time
Time Sampling
observe the interactions that take place at designated intervals of time
Field Experiment
a study in which a researcher directly intervenes in a natural setting to observe the consequences of that intervention
Hawthorne Effect
participants intentionally adjust their behaviour to conform to what they beehive is the purpose of the study
