Surveillance Flashcards
Define surveillance
when authorities observe and monitor peoples behaviour and actions to control them
How was behaviour controlled in Pre Industrial era?
by harsh punishment under sovereign ruling. eg executions stocks (corporal punishment)
How is behaviour controlled ie modern era ie now?
Because the monchary now has less power, law has taken over and we use prison for rehab
Talk about PANOPTICON
A prison of circular building where everyone ie all inmates cells face inwards and can be seen. Makes surveillance easy. Within the courtyard there is guard in tower with 360 degree view of all cells. Prisoners therefore more likely to behave and rehab.
Evaluate faucaults theory of history of surveillance
Although punishment isnt as harsh anymore, people still fear fines and prison
Faucalt exaggerates how effective surveillance really is
Outline surveillance and labelling:
surveillance tech is an EXTENSION OF HUMAN SURVEILLANCE AND NEGATIVE LABELLING.
eg - people choose who to use this on. Black 8 times more likely to be stopped and searched than white
Evaluate surveillance and labelling
It only focuses on PROCESS of surveillance labelling rather the effect and impact
Outline Acturial justice and risk management
Feeley and simon 1994- Reject the view that all members of society are under equal monitor.
how does surveillance work (feeley simon)
works about preventing crime
ensures groups who are more likely to offend get caught
based on actuarial stats
evaluate feely and simon
discriminative and stereotypical
Outline surveillance assemblages
Stand alone tech by individuals. eg CCTV or face recognition
evaluate assemblages
potential abuse of power, sometimes surveillance isnt needed.
invasion of privacy
people under unesscary scrutiny when no crime is being done
outline synoptic surveillance
It is not only done by authority, but normal people too. eg recording on mobile phones
what is synopticon?
everyone is watching everyone
evaluate synoptic surveillance
Little is done to challenge status quo in society
Feminism- synoptic surveillance allows male gaze to extend because tech used to objectify women
