Surgical Procedure Flashcards
1
Q
What technique is used for cataract extraction?
A
Pharmacoemulsification
2
Q
What is the goal in cataract surgeries?
A
- soften the nucleus
- extract the lens
- replace it with an IOL
- minimise damage to the eye and ri of complications
3
Q
What anaesthesia is used for cataract apps?
A
When a px is unable to avoid eye movements during surgery due to being anxious or children , general anaesthesia is used. Local anesthetisa is used for everyone else and it takes about 30mins

Q
Describe the procedure of cataract surgeries:
A
- 3mm corneal incision allows the insertion of IOL
- removal of circular portion of the anterior capsule which creates an aperture from which the lens is removed and the iol is inserted
- the remaining capsule supports the IOL
- the phaco probe is inserted
- the probe emits ultrasonic radiation which allows for the nucleus to be broken up into smaller pieces and it combines with aspirating fluid hence emulsification
- the probe then vacuums out the lens fragments
- then the soft nucleus is removed by suction
- the phaco probe is removed and iol is inserted via a needle and unfolds and gets shaped over the pupil being held by haptics in the equator region

Q
Do px’s need stitches for cataract surgeries?
A
No, a single suture can be used which dissolves overtime
