Surgical nursing Flashcards
What post-operative care is required for a GDV patient?
- Maintain on IV fluids
- Monitor potassium levels as can be low
- Metroclopramide to stimulate gut motility
- Patient education (feeding routines)
What is the function of the drill bits?
Glide hole - drilled using a drill bit that has the same EXTERNAL DIAMETER as the screw being placed
Pilot hole - drilled using drill bit that has same diameter as CORE of screw
What is the function of the drill sleeve?
Prevent drill bits collecting debris from surrounding tissue
What is the function of the countersink?
Cuts an indent to allow the head of the screw to be flush with the surface of the bone
What is the function of the depth gauge?
Measure depth of drilled hole and determine length of screw placed
What is the function of the tap?
Tap the thread in a drilled hole before screw is place
What is the function of the screwdriver?
Place & tighten screws
What is the functions of the following pins:
- Steinmanns pins
- Arthrodesis wire
- Kirschner wire
- Rush pins
- Similar function as K-wire (pin bones) but larger in diameter
- Hold together small pieces of bone too small to be fixed with wire
- Pin bones
- Pin bones
Discuss how to prepare a patient of opthalmic surgery (7 marks)
- Wear non-sterile gloves
- Apply barrier gel in the eye to protect from clipping
- Clip area (roughly 2cm diameter)
- Remove clipped hair
- Scrub using povidine-iodine (not scrub as can irritate cornea)
- Clean surrounding skin with 1:10 dilution of iodine and water for minimum 5 minutes
- Flush the eye in sterile saline and iodine 1:50 dilution ensuring all barrier gel removed
Name a non-absorbable suture material that has mono & mulitifilament options?
Supramid
Outline the wicking effect and risks
Occurs when fluid is drawn into the suture material from the environment and surrounding tissues. It is likely to contain bacteria and may cause surgical site infection therefore delaying wound healing
What are the conversions between imperial and metric suture sizes?
2 metric = 3-0
3 metric = 2-0
What are the 3 types of needles and their uses?
- Round-bodied = Separate tissue fibres, used in friable tissue such as internal organs
- Taper point = Gradually broadens from the tip for greater separation of tissues
- Cutting = Cutting through tissue, used for dense tissue eg skin
What are the 2 types of cutting needes?
Conventional = cutting edge on inside edge Reverse = cutting edge on outside edge
Identify 2 absorbable and 2 non-absorbable suture material
Absorbable: -Dexon (-Catgut) -PDS -Vicryl -Monocyrl
Non absorbable:
- Nylon
- Mersilk
- Prolene
- Ethilon
