Fractures Flashcards
Open
Open wound present over fracture site and exposing to environment
Complicated
Damage to other important tissue as well as bone (eg nerves & blood vessels)
Simple
One fracture line, two fragments
Segmental
More than one fracture line on the shaft of a long bone
Comminuted
One fracture site but more than 2 fragments
Multiple
More than one fracture site and several fragments
Transverse
Fracture at right angle to location of fracture line
Oblique
Fracture is diagonal to long axis of bone
Spiral
Fracture spirals around long axis of bone
Longitudinal
Fracture is parallel long axis of bone
Complete
Bone is completely broken in two or more fragments
Incomplete
Cortex is broken, periosteum remains intact on one side of bone
Fissure
Crack in cortex but no displacement of any fragments
Closed
No wound over surface of fractured bone
What are the principles of fracture repair?
- Reduce fracture
- Align fragments
- Immobilise fragments
- Restore soft tissue function
