Surgical asepsis & instrument sterilization Flashcards
Sterilization
killing all microbes (bacteria, spore, virus, fungi) done on inanimate objects (ex. autoclave, EtO)–> kill everything
Disinfection/ Disinfectants
reduce # of microbes used on surfaces; does not kill spores! (ex. bleach, alcohols, quaternary ammoniums)
Antiseptic
reduce microbe amount- used on skin (ex. chlorohexidine, iodine & alcohol)
Asepsis or Aseptic technique
absence of microbe or technique that maintains sterility.
Of the two surgeon skin preps which is preferred?
alcohol- based due to increased compliance, but there is no difference between both; except iodine not effective.
Why is it important to rinse instruments afterward to remove detergents?
Residues can cause toxicity in next pt.
If a pack is wet after autoclaving, is it sterile?
No
What are two low temperature options for sterilization?
Ethylene oxide (hazards) & hydrogen peroxide plasma
Where should sterile indicator be placed?
place in difficult location to sterilize (inside pack)
What is the standard wrapping material type?
non-woven polypropylene that is nonpermeable and can be sterilized in any method (steam, EtO & H202 plasma)
