How can hand hygiene be improved?
Keeping the skin intact, nails short and unvarnished, removing and jewellery and keeping sleeves above the elbows
Why is double gloving important in the intra-op period?
It reduces perforation risks to the inner gloves and therefore reduces the risk of exposure to blood borne viruses
What is the purpose of collecting a health history on admission?
It assists with developing a data base on the patient and provides an opportunity to develop a more comfortable relationship with the patient
What things should you ask the patient when obtaining a health history?
- Age and D.O.B
- Occupation, marital status and if they have children
- Current and past medical problems
- Any medications they are taking
- If they have any allergies and what are the reactions
- Cultural background and religion
- Familys medical history
- Social history
What are the 6 P’s of hourly rounding?
Pain: any pain and if so rate out of 10
Position: take action to reduce pressure sores
Personal needs: do they need to go to the toilet?
Pumps: is everything intact and running correctly
Proximity: is the buzzer reachable
Presentation: what they look and feel like
What is the difference between the generic name and the trade name of a drug?
Generic name: is derived from the main chemical composition
Trade name: the brand name - given by the company
Whats the difference between a drug side effect and a drug allergy?
Both cause an undesirable effects however a drug allergy is much more severe and is to do with an unexpected immunological response
What are the 6 elements of a drug order?
1) patients full name
2) time, date the order was written
3) The type of drug written in the generic name
4) the dose, stregnth or # of tablets
5) Route of administration and frequency
6) Signed by the medical officer
What are the 10 rights of medication administration?

4 things you should consider before administering medications?
1) Wash hands,
2) Check name and MRN number on wristband against chart
3) Give the patient the right to refuse
4) Check expiry date of drug
