What is a primary survey and what does it involve (ABDC)?

A

Primary survey is the initial assessment done on a patient. It involves looking at a patients:
A; airway- any obstructions
B; breathing - abnormal noises, RR, O2 sats
C; circulation - skin colour, cap refill, BP, HR
D; disability - wounds, oedema, ROM

What is a secondary survey and what does it involve?

A
A secondary survey gives a bigger picture of a patients overall conditions. Involves being assessed for trauma and includes: 
E: exposure
F: fluids (in and out, IV theraphy) 
G: glucose and give pain relief

What are the 6 P’s involved in a neuromuscular assessment?

  • Pain; presence of pain
  • Pulse; presence of pulse, regular or irregular?
  • Pallor; pale colour of the skin
  • Parathesia; sensation of prickling and tingling
  • Paralysis; inability to move
