Call your doctor or nurse if you notice any of the following signs:
- Nausea (wanting to throw up ) that does not go away
- Vomiting that does not go away
- Bleeding that does not stop in the area that had surgery
- Surgery area getting very red
- Foul smelling drainage (fluid coming out of the area that had surgery)
- Fever higher than 38 degrees
- Area that had surgery is swollen and hard, or firm
- Your drain falls out
What is breast cancer surgery?
Surgery on the breast to try to remove cancer.
What are the two main types of breast cancer surgery?
- Lumpectomy (surgery to remove a part of the breast)
- Mastectomy (surgery to remove the whole breast)
What is a lumpectomy?
a lumpectomy is surgery to remove a lump in the breast, and some surrounding tissue in the area around it. The amount of tissue removed depends on the size of the lump.
Sometimes, a lumpectomy is also called a:
partial mastectomy
wide excision
wedge excision
excisional biopsy
What is the goal of a lumpectpmy?
To remove the tumour and try to prevent the spread of cancer.
What is a Molli Seed
Used for a process called “seed localization” for small lesions. Is inserted while the pt is awake with local freezing and helps guide the surgeon to the area being removed.
What area the steps of a lumpectomy?
- Molli seed insertion another day before surgery
- IV insertion, administer general anesthesia, a breathing tube is put in while pt is asleep
- Incision is made and the lump and surrounding tissue is removed
- Incision is closed with stitches. Usually dissolvable. Tissue is then sent to a pathologist
How long does a lumpectomy take?
Can take up to 90 minutes (1.5hrs)
What is a mastectomy?
Surgery to remove the whole breast. Usually includes the nipple.
What is the goal of a mastectomy?
To remove the cancer in the breast and try to prevent the spread of cancer.
