Surgery Flashcards
Halsted’s 8 Principles
-strict asepsis
-gentle tissue handling
-preservation of blood supply
-adequate haemostasis
-elimination of dead space
-minimise tissue tension
-accurate tissue closure
-debridement of dead tissue
Aseptic technique is defined as
Practice which prevents cross contamination in surgery
Preparation of patient skin involves
- Chlorhexidine surgical scrub
- Alcohol
- Alcohol/Chlorhexidine solution
Surgical hand scrub takes
5-8 minutes
Rough handling or crushing of tissues will lead to
Swelling, inflammation, and post-op pain/discomfort for the animal
Haemostasis is achieved by (4)
-ligation (suture)
-electrocautery
-haemostatic foreceps
-pressure
Dead space allows for
The accumulation of fluids and air - disrupts healing
How do you prevent dead space (4)
-good tissue apposition
-pressure bandages
-use of sutures
-active and passive drains
Layer debridement is
-debriefing progressively from surface of wound to deeper tissue
-allows for consecration of healthy tissue
En bloc debridement
-complete excision of wound leaving healthy tissue
-wound closure can occur
