Surface Features Flashcards
What is a limestone pavement
Surface of a karst landscape is called a LIMESTONE PAVEMENT
How is limestone pavement formed
*Rain water falls onto the exposed limestone and passes through vertical joints or cracks in the limestone
*carbonation makes the joints wider by dissolving the calcium carbonate in the limestone until then they look like grooves or gaps in limestone
Grooves or gaps in a limestone pavement are called
Grikes (the block left in between grikes ar e called Clint’s)
What is a swallow hole
River that flow over a limestone surface can disappear underground through a SWALLOW HOLE
How is a swallow hole formed
*river flows over limestone water widen joints in Rock through carbonation
*river disappears from surface begins to flow underground along BEDDING PLANES
*carbonation and physical force of the moving water called HYDRAULIC ACTION enlarge joints and bedding planes
*the place where rivers disappear underground is a SWALLOW HOLE
*River continues flow underground helping form underground karst features such as passages and caves
Swallow hole size
Vary in size depending on how small/big river is burrow 6 meters wide and 16metres deep
