Chemical Weathering Flashcards
What is chemical weathering
Chemical weathering is when rocks are dissolved because of chemical reaction
Examples of chemical weathering
Carbonation
What is carbonation
The atmosphere is full of a gas called carbon Dioxide
2. Rainwater mixes with Co2 to form weak carbonic acid (H2CO3)
3. The H2CO3 has a huge affect on Limestone rock! Because it contains 80% calcium carbonate
4.H2CO3 reacts with calcium carbonate in limestone and dissolves it
Is limestone permeable
Yes
Where does carbonation occur
Carbonation occurs in areas where bare limestone rock is exposed to weather these are known as KARST LANSCAPES!!!!!!!!!!!
Example of karst landscape in Ireland
Burden county Clare
