Surface Anatomy Flashcards
Midsternal
Midline of the Sternum
Mammary or Midclavicular Line
Runs vertically down from midway between the centre of the SSN and the tip of the acromion (joining of the clavicle and the shoulder)
Lateral Sternal
Along sternal margin (between the midsternal and parasternal lines)
Parasternal
Midway between lateral sternal and mammary/midclavicle lines
Order of anterior surface lines (medial to lateral)
midsternal > lateral sternal > parasternal > midclavicular line
Anterior and Posterior Axillary Lines
vertical from corresponding axillary folds
Midaxillary line
Runs downward from the apex of the axilla
Vertebra Prominins
7th cervical vertebra, it can be palpated at the base of the neck
Scapular Line
Vertical through the inferior angle of the scapula
Describe the 4 Quadrants of the abdomen
Horizontal line is drawn through the umbilicus
Vertical line drawn through the midline from the xiphoid to the pubic symphysis
Transpyloric Line
passes through the inferior border of the L1 vertebra (superior horizontal line)
halfway between the jugular notch and the upper border of the symphysis pubis
Transtubercular
at the level of the L5 vertebra (inferior horizontal line)
midway between the upper transverse (transpyloric) and the upper border of the symphysis pubis
Right Hypochondrium
right upper portion
Left Hypochondrium
Left Upper portion
epigastrium
upper middle portion
right lateral
right middle portion
Right inguinal
right lower portion
umbilical

Hypogastrium
lower middle portion
left lateral
left middle portion
left inguinal
left lower portion
Spine Configuration
C1-7 (C1=atlas, C2 = axis) (cervical vertebrae)
T1-12 (thoracic vertebrae)
L1-5 (lumbar vertebrae)
S1-2 (sacrum)
Coccyx
Symphysis pubis
Sternal Angle
felt as an elevation between the manubrium (bone of SSN) and the body of the sternum
Superior Mediastinum
superior lines above the transverse plane at level of the T1-T4
Inferior Mediastinum
lies below T4 but above the diaphragm
