Suprahyoid neck Flashcards
pharynx components
nasopharynx, oropharynx, oral cavity, hypopharynx, larynx (below hyoid)
masticator space
includes pterygoid plate (lateral/medial pterygoid), temporalis muscle, mandible, and masseter
inntervated by CN V3
ddx for masticator space lesions
odontogenic disease, mandibular lesion (osteosarcom/mets), rhabdomyosarcoma
carotid space contents
incomplete fascial ring surrounding carotid artery/jugular vein
ICA, jugular vein, vagus nerve (CN X)
also IV, XI, XII pass transiently thru the carotid space; no lymph nodes
ddx for carotid space mass
paraganglioma (carotid body tumor vs glomus vagale); carotid body splays while glomus vagale displaces
schwannoma
neurofibroma (NF1)
parapharyngeal space
fat filled space, may contain ectopic minor sailvary gland tissue
adjacent to carotid, parotid, and masticator space
perivertebral space
contains paraspinal muscles , spine, and vertebral arteries
of cervical LN levels
7
level I lymph nodes
IA: submental; between anterior belly of digastrics
IB: submandibular; lateral to digastrics to posterior margin of submandibular gland
level II lymph nodes
upper internal jugular LN from skull base to inferior margin of hyoid bone
IIA: anterior to internal jugular vein
IIB: posterior to internal jugular vein; anterior to SCM
level III lymph node
middle jugular veins; from inferior hyoid to superior aspect of cricoid; bordered by SCM
level IV lymph nodes
inferior jugular LN; inferior aspect of cricoid to clavicle
level V lymph node
posterior cervical nodes
VA: superior; skull base to inferior cricoid
VB: inferior; inferior cricoid to clavicle
level VI lymph node
pretracheal nodes; anteromedial lower neck bound laterally by carotid sheaths
level VII lymph node
superior mediastinal nodes; manubrium to brachiocephalic vein
