Supporting Numeracy Development Flashcards
What are the 4 key methods used to facilitate their numeracy development?
When working with children on mathematical activities, you may need to act as a facilitator for their learning.
You may need to support them through talking to them in different ways to encourage them to stay on task:
Commentary– talk to them about what they are doing as they are working in order to reinforce.
Questioning– encouraging children’s experiences and helping them to think about the task in different ways to extend their learning (OPEN-ENDED).
Repetition– going over to repeat concepts as they need opportunities to practice and reinforce skills.
Praise– use it whenever possible to motivate and build their confidence (VERBAL OR NON-VERBAL)
How to understand planning and organising numeracy provision?
Maths is taught through topic work.
This means maths is part of a wide study around a subject.
In a nursery, the curriculum requires delivery of mathematics through practical activities and discussions.
Children carry out a range of activities based on prediction and problem-solving.
Activities need to be meaningful, purposeful and in context to their topic.
Maths should be brought into their normal routine.
How to support children to link concepts to experience?
It is an abstract subject.
They need to link concepts to practical activities to make them meaningful for children.
This means their introduction to the subject is through play and exploration.
They should encourage them to recognise number patterns in their environment and use them when they can.
How to assess their understanding of numeracy?
You need to constantly observe children’s reactions in mathematical situations, so make sure you direct your questions accordingly.
This is because it is easy for children to misunderstand mathematical concepts.
Professionals should model to children how mathematics is used in everyday life and discuss it with them.
E.G sorting problems, using money, thinking
about capacity, counting
How to support the use of mathematical language?
They should always reinforce vocabulary used in settings.
This extends children’s vocabulary and it checks their understanding of any terms used.
Children who have English as an additional language may need you to explain the terms to them.
Commentary– enables them to become familiar with the language used and encourages them to think through the process as they are working.
