Q

List the chemical properties of so2

A

Thermal decomposition: On strongheating to 1200c it decomposes into so3 and s

Combustibility: So2 isnt combustible but metals can burn in it’s atmosphere due to the generation of heat which causes thermal decomposition

Reducing property: SO2 tends to gain oxygen to form so3.

Oxidizing property: so2 contains two atoms of oxygen hence acting as an oxidizing agent with stronger reducing agent.

Acidic nature: So2 dissolves in water to give h2so3 .

Q

LIst the physical properties of so2

A

. it is colorless having a pungent odor of burning sulphur
. it is corrosive and poisonous
.It is highly soluble in water and heavier than air
. It is highly volatile gas, it has low freezing point of -76 degrees c, hence used for refirgeration

Q

What are the two main tests to identify so2 gas?

A
  1. When so2 gas is contacted with filter paper soaked in sodium dichromate, then the paper turns green from orange
  2. When so2 is contacted withwet litmus paper, it turns red from blue

Q

What happens when conc h2so4 contacts on skin?

A

THe h2so4 sucks the moisture out of the skin and enormous heat is generated from the reaction between the h2so4 and the moisture, with causes burning sensation and deep seated wounds

14
Q

Why is dilute sulphuric acid not used in the preparation of so2?

A

Because dilute h2so4 produces cuso4+ h2 as reduction property of cu is higher than h2

16
Q

describe the disassociation process of h2so4

A

when heated h2so4 disassociates and converts into so3 and water

17
Q

describe the acidic character of h2so4

A

h2so4 in an aqueous solution, h2so4 ionizes in two steps and forms two series of salts: normal sulphates and acidic sulphates

18
Q

describe h2so4 as a dehydrating agent

A

conc h2so4 has strong affinity for water. Hence, with water, conc h2so4 forms a hydrate with high amt of heat

19
Q

List some examples of conc. h2so4 behaving as strong dehydrating agent

A

. charring of sugar

. Action of organic compound
