Suphur Flashcards
Define dibasic acid
acids with two replaceable h2 ions
Justify as to why is the bleaching action of so2 is temporary?
It is since the reduced product regains it’s original color when exposed to air.
List the Allotrophy of sulhpur
Rhombic sulphur prismatic sulphur plastic sulphur milk of sulphur collodial sulphur
List the chemical properties of so2
Thermal decomposition: On strongheating to 1200c it decomposes into so3 and s
Combustibility: So2 isnt combustible but metals can burn in it’s atmosphere due to the generation of heat which causes thermal decomposition
Reducing property: SO2 tends to gain oxygen to form so3.
Oxidizing property: so2 contains two atoms of oxygen hence acting as an oxidizing agent with stronger reducing agent.
Acidic nature: So2 dissolves in water to give h2so3 .
LIst the physical properties of so2
. it is colorless having a pungent odor of burning sulphur
. it is corrosive and poisonous
.It is highly soluble in water and heavier than air
. It is highly volatile gas, it has low freezing point of -76 degrees c, hence used for refirgeration
Name the units of the h2so4 production by contact process
Pyrite burner, Dust removal Chamber, Cooler, Scrubber, Drying tower, Arsenic Purifier, Testing box, Pre-heater, Contact tower, Absorption Tower
Physical Properties of H2so4
- It is colorless, syrupy and hygroscopic
- Pure h2so4 is a badconductor for electricity.
- Conc. H2so4 fumes strongly in air
- Highly corrosive
State the main principle involved in the preparation of so2 gas in lab.
when copper turnings are heated with hot and conc, h2so4, so2 is formed.
What are the favorable condition for the maximum yield of h2so4?
High concentration of oxygen low temperature high pressure use of suitable catalyst purity of gases
What are the two main tests to identify so2 gas?
- When so2 gas is contacted with filter paper soaked in sodium dichromate, then the paper turns green from orange
- When so2 is contacted withwet litmus paper, it turns red from blue
What happens when conc h2so4 contacts on skin?
THe h2so4 sucks the moisture out of the skin and enormous heat is generated from the reaction between the h2so4 and the moisture, with causes burning sensation and deep seated wounds
what happens when gas obtained by heating copper and conc h2so4 is passed through chlorine water?
THe chlorine water oxidises the so2 into h2so4 and hcl
What is allotrophy?
Allotrophy is the existence of an element in two or more than two forms in the same state with similar chemical properties but different physical properties.
Why is dilute sulphuric acid not used in the preparation of so2?
Because dilute h2so4 produces cuso4+ h2 as reduction property of cu is higher than h2
Chemical properties of h2so4
disassociation, acidic character, strong dehydrating agent, strong oxidizing agent, precipitating agent
