Superstructure Flashcards
Where would you typically see an RC Frame?
Medium-High Rise residential projects
How long does concrete take to cure?
Set: 24-48 hours
Full cure: 28 days
What are the advantages of using precast concrete frame?
Produced in factory-controlled conditions
Eliminates curing times and formwork
Can be assembled in cold weather and generally by semi-skilled labour
What types of upper floor are available?
In-situ reinforced concrete – can be ribbed or waffled to reduce depth and weight (effectively a honey comb effect)
Pre-cast concrete – for example, pot and beam composite floor.
Profiled steel deck (Metsec) acting as permanent soffit and formwork. In-situ concrete in-fill. Principally used on steel framed buildings.
What is slip forming?
A method for constructing a repetitive structure such as a core, lift shaft or stairwell.
The formwork is constantly moving upwards, approx. 1” every 10mins.
What is a traditional roof built up of?
Purlin
Joist
Strut
Rafter
Hanger
What is jump forming?
Jump forming is where a significant height of concrete is cast and left to cure.
The whole formwork module is then moved up and repeated.
What is cross laminated timber?
Glued together panels of timber to provide greater strength
Advantages of concrete?
No requirements for fire protection
Good acoustic properties
