Superpower
A nation which is able to project influence and dominate on a global scale.
Uni-Polar World
There is only one superpower. Stable but hard to maintain.
Bi-Polar World
Exists when there are two superpowers. Competition between two opposing powers may lead to conflict.
Multi-Polar World
Means there are multiple superpowers. Less stable and can lead to increased conflict.
International Governmental Organisations (IGO)
Facilitate the influence of superpowers by promoting free trade and capitalism.
World Bank
Organisation that provides finance, advice and research to developing nations to aid economic advancement by reducing poverty through low-interest loans and grants.
World Trade Organisation (WTO)
Reduces barriers and promotes free trade whilst ensuring that there are agreed national trade laws.
International Monetary Fund (IMF)
Aims to bring financial stability to the world through currency exchange. Funded by members who pay according to the size of their economy.
World Economic Forum (WEF)
Promotes free trade and in favour of TNCs. Aims to promote global links and provide solutions to global issues.
Hard Power
The use of economic and military force to control other countries behaviour.
Soft Power
The use of political and cultural influence to try and persuade countries to behave in a certain way.
Neo-Colonialism
An indirect mechanism of control.
Colonialism
Gaining control, building an empire and exerting influence over other countries.
