Define sphere of influence
An area beyond a country’s borders, over which it feels it should have power but without having any formal authority there
CASE STUDY- The Arctic Circle
The North Pole is not owned by any country
Many countries have put in claims for it which has caused tension.
Russia, Denmark, Norway and Canada are the countries interested.
The Arctic is melting meaning there is more resources available under the ice.
Estimated 1/8 of the worlds oil
CASE STUDY- South China Sea
5 countries lay claim to part of it.
This is due to the UN convention law of the sea stating that a country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) extends 200 miles off a country’s coast.
These 5 countries claims overlap, causing tensions.
China is building artificial islands and building military bases on them. This shows China are willing to defend their claim with force.

If fishermen in Gaza go more than 6 miles out they risk being shot
