the “chain” is Marley’s sins that are now causing him pain in the afterlife
it is a warning to Scrooge about things that will cause him guilt and regret later in life

Quote 2: “the insect on the leaf pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust” - Ghost of Christmas Present
shows Scrooge the importance of helping the poor
