Guilt and blame Flashcards
Dickens represents guilt as a burden in your soul once you have passed away
Quote 1: The chain he drew was clasped about his middle… made of cash boxes, padlocks and ledgers
All the things Marley was obsessed with in life are now stuck with him forever and leaves him feeling guilty
Quote 2: “I wear the chains I forged in life”
Shows that the bad decisions you make in life leaves you feeling guilty in the afterlife
Dickens shows how in the afterlife if you have made bad decisions you will feel guilt and then regret at the things you could have done but now can’t because you are dead
Quote 1: “I should like to have given him something”
Scrooge regrets no helping out a poor carol boy singer but can’t change anything as it has already happened
Quote 2: “Why did I walk through the crows with my eyes turned down”
Marley regrets his decisions in the past and wishes he has been more sociable and not focused so much on money
Dickens shows how other spirits around Scrooge feel guilt at their past decisions and how that’s what Scrooge will be like unless he changes his ways
Quote 1: “Cried out unable to help a wretched woman”
Shows a spirit suffering as they can’t help someone who is suffering as they are dead and how they watch people suffering and feel regret and not helping people when they were alive
Quote 2: “Lost the power forever”
Shows how if Scrooge doesn’t change his ways before he dies he will never be able to ever again
