Super.Human Flashcards
SOUND - Music
“So you want to be a boxer” from Bugsy Malone depicts the struggle of athletes with a positive feel
SOUND - Sound effects
Underscore the music
Eg diabetic sounds of grunting, groaning and applying tape which are amplified show reality and true pain
EDITING - Slow motion
Used to show the crash on the cycling track, alongside the muted sound this dramatises the scene
SETTING - Visual codes
The athletes seen in athletic settings eg the gym juxtaposes the casual settings of domestic settings eg the dining table. Suggests the normality of these people.
Strauss - structuralism
Binary opposition between images of gruelling training regimes with celebratory images at the end of the once success is achieved.
LANGUAGE - “to be a Paralympian there must be something wrong with you”
This is a conceptual binary opposition.
It challenges audiences perceptions of paralympians (as either victims or heroes) vs reality
LANGUAGE - “Super.Human”
Shows that the athletes are hard working athletes but are also real human beings who live somewhat relatable lives (are mothers etc)
Represented as neither victims to be pitied nor heroic superhumans to be in awe of - they are regular humans
Gauntletts identity theory
The advert addresses an under-represented social group, allowing disabled people to see themselves positively represented. This could encourage confidence and empowerment.
Gerbners cultivation theory
May cause audiences to change their cultivated ideas on disabled people and begin to understand the realities of disabilities.
EDITING - eisensteins intellectual montage
Close up of a woman doing neck excursuses is intercut with a close up shot of army boots marching. Shows how athletes all have to undergo a strict and gruelling regime.
May also depict the patriotic motivation behind the hard work.
EDITING - elliptical editing
Close up of a man lifting weights, but in each clip his shirt colour changes. This connotes the determination and persistence of the athletes despite living normal lives too.
EDITING - graphic match cut
A close up of a bicycle wheel cuts to a hamster wheel which represents the seemingly never ending cycle of training an athlete undergoes
EDITING - timelapse
Time-lapse of a close up bruise developing.
Reinforces that they are humans, not heroes to be in complete awe of - they face the struggles that any other athlete would.
Realism
LIGHTING - dark scenes
Dark vs light binary oppositions
Dark scenes eg the establishing shot of a woman standing alone in the darkness with a beam of light on her, a long shot of thousands of balls falling on a man on wheelchair, or long shot of swimmer being dragged down by a huge medal depict a surreal/nightmare-ish feel to the scenes - depicting the pressure, stresses and isolation faced by athletes
LIGHTING - light scenes
dark vs light binary oppositions
Light scenes depict reality - and the athletes normal lives eg a mid shot of a man in a wheelchair eating breakfast and playing drums in a home setting.
Shows that the athletes are not defined by their jobs, they have lives and interests as everyday people do.
