Superficial Posterior Thoraco-appendicular (Extrinsic Shoulder) Muscles Flashcards
Trapezius lateral attachment
Lateral 1/3 of clavicle, acromion, and spine of scapula
Trapezius medial attachment
Medial 1/3 of superior nuchal line, EOP, nuchal ligament, and spinous processes of C7-T12 vertebrae
Trapezius innervation
Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI: motor fibers), and C3, C4 spinal nerves (pain and propioceptive fibers)
Trapezius main actions
Superior part elevates, inferior part depresses, and middle part retracts scapula. Inferior + superior parts together rotate glenoid cavity superiorly
Latissimus dorsi medial attachment
Spinous processes of inferior 6 thoracic vertebrae, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, and inferior 3-4 ribs
Latissimus dorsi lateral attachment
Floor of intertubercular sulcus of humerus
Latissimus dorsi innervation
Thoracodorsal nerve (C6, C7, C8, keep the latts great)
Latissimus dorsi main actions
Extends, adducts, and medially rotates shoulder joint; raises body towards arms during climbing
Levator scapulae medial attachment
Posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C1-C4 vertebrae
Levator scapulae lateral attachment
Medial border of scapula superior to root of spine
Levator scapulae innervation
Dorsal scapular (C5) and C3, C4 cervical spinal nerves
Levator scapulae main actions
Elevates scapula and tilts its glenoid cavity inferiorly by rotating scapula
Rhomboid medial attachment
Minor: nuchal ligament, spinous processes of C7 and T1 vertebrae
Major: spinous processes of T2-T5 vertebrae
Rhomboid lateral attachment
Minor: triangular area at medial end of scapula spine
Major: medial border of scapula from level of spine to inferior angle
Rhomboid innervation
Dorsal scapular nerve (C5) and C4
