Superficial & Intermediate Muscles Flashcards
Trapezius
Insertion
- Lateral third of clavicle
- acromion
- spine of scapula
Trapezius
Origin
- medial third of superior nuchal line
- external occipital protuberance
- nuchal ligament
- spinous processes of C7-T12 vertebrae
Trapezius
Innervation
- Spinal accessory nerve(CN XI) (motor fibers);
- C3/C4 spinal nerves (pain and proprioceptive fibers)
Trapezius (Upper)
Action
elevates scapula
Trapezius (Lower) Action
Depresses, adducts, and posteriorly tilts scapula
Trapezius (Middle) Action
adducts scapula
Trapezius (Upper and Lower) Action
together upwardly rotates scapula
Trapezius (Scapula Fixed) Action
Upper trap ipsilat laterally flexes, contralat rotates head and neck, bilat extends head and neck
Latissimus Dorsi
Origin
- spinous processes of T7-T12
- Thoracolumbar Fascia
- iliac crest
- inferior 3 or 4 ribs

Latissimus Dorsi
Innervation
Thoracodorsal nerve (C6,C7, C8)
Latissimus Dorsi
Action
- Extends, adducts, and medially rotates humerus
- Posteriorly tilts scapula
Rhomboid Major
Origin
Spinous Processes of T2-T5
Rhomboid Major
Insertion
Medial border of scapula from level of spine to
inferior angle
Rhomboid Major
Innervation
Dorsal scapular nerve (C4, C5)
Rhomboid Major
Action
-Adducts, elevates, and downwardly rotates
scapula
-Stabilizes scapula on thoracic wall

-Stabilizes scapula on thoracic wall
Levator Scapulae
Origin
-Posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C1-C4 vertebrae
Levator Scapulae
Insertion
- Medial border of scapula
- superior to root of scapular spine
Levator Scapulae
Innervation
- Dorsal scapular nerve(C5)
- cervical nerves (C4,C5)
Levator Scapulae
Action
- Elevates and downwardly rotates scapula
- scapula fixed: ipsilat laterally flexes & rotates
- bilat extends head & neck
Serratus Posterior Superior
Origin
- Nuchal ligament
- spinousprocesses of C7-T3 vertebrae
Serratus Posterior Superior
