Superficial back, shoulder & scapular region Flashcards
Latissimus dorsi
Nerve: Thoracodorsal nerve
Function: Extends, adducts, and medically rotates humerus
Trapezius
Accessory nerve (CN XI) and C3 &C4 (spinal nerves
Functions:
Upper fibers–>Elevate scapula :)
Middle fibers–> Retract scapula :I
Lower fibers–> Depress scapula :(
- upper part of trapezius helps serratus anterier in abduction of humerus of more than 90 degrees
Droopy Shoulder?
caused by paralysis of trapezius
Levator scapulae
Nerve: Dorsal scapular nerve
Function: elevates & fixes scapula
Rhomboidei (major & minor)
Nerve: Dorsal scapular nerve
Function: Retracts & elevates scapula
Serratus Anterior
Nerve: Long thoracic nerve
Function: Protracts scapula and holds it against thoracic wall
Winged scapula
injury to long thoracic nerve==serratus anterior muscle can’t hold scapula against thoracic wall
DELTOID
Axillary nerve
Function:
Anterior fibers: flex and medially rotate humerus
Middle fibers: chief ABDUCTOR of humerus
Posterior fibers: extend and laterally rotate humerus
Teres major
Lower subscapular nerve
Function: ADDUCTS and medially rotates humerus
Supraspinatus
Suprascapular nerve
Function: abducts the humerus
Intraspinatus
Suprascapular nerve
Functions: laterally rotates the humerus
Teres minor
Axillary nerve
Function: laterally rotates humerus
Subscapularis
Upper & lower subscapular nerves
Functions: medially rotates humerus
Omohyoid muscle
Cervical nerves 1, 2, & 3
Functions: Depresses, retracts, and steadies the hyoid bone
Inferior attachment: superior border of scapula
Superior attachment: hyoid bone
Triangle of auscultation borders?
Superior–>latissimus dorsi
Medial–> scapula
Inferolateral –>trapezius
- over 6th intercostal space
- *good place to hear respiratory sounds
