Summoning/Battling/Effects (Level 2) Flashcards
What are the different types of mechanics for getting monsters to the field? (Summoning through an effect or through the extra deck is all grouped as 1 mechanic) [Hint: there are 5-6 Mechanics depending on how you look at it]
- Normal Summon
- Set
- Flip Summon
- Tribute Summon/Set
- Special Summon
How many monsters can each player Summon per turn?
Each player is allowed 1 normal summon/set/tribute summon. However, monsters can be special summoned as many times as possible.
What happens when an Attack position monster attacks a Defense position monster whose DEF value is equal to the Attack Position monster’s ATK value?
Essentially nothing. Neither monster is destroyed and neither player loses Life Points.
What happens when an Attack position monster attacks a Defense position monster whose DEF value is lower than the Attack Position monster’s ATK value?
The defense position monster is destroyed. However, the controller of the defense position monster does not lose any Life Points.
What happens when an Attack position monster attacks a Defense position monster whose DEF value is higher than the Attack Position monster’s ATK value?
Neither monster is destroyed. However, the controller of the attack position monster will lose Life Points equal to the difference of the attack position monster’s ATK value and the defense position monster’s DEF value.
What happens when an Attack position monster attacks an Attack position monster with an ATK value that is different than the ATK value of the attacking monster?
The Attack position monster with the lowest ATK value will be destroyed. Also, the controller of the destroyed monster will lose Life Points equal to the difference of ATK Values.
What happens when an Attack position monster with an ATK value of 0 attacks another Attack position monster with an ATK value of 0.
Essentially nothing. Neither monster is destroyed and neither player loses Life Points.
What Happens when an Attack Position monster attacks another Attack Position monster with the same ATK value? (Assume the ATK value is greater than 0)
Both monsters are destroyed. However, neither player takes any battle damage.
Your opponent placed a monster from their hand to a monster zone in face-down defense position. What is this mechanic called and what level range would the played monster be?
This mechanic is called a “Set” and the level range of the monster would be anywhere from level 1 to level 4.
Your opponent played a monster from their hand to a main monster zone in face-up attack position (assume no effects were used). What is this mechanic called and what level range should the monster be in?
This mechanic is a “Normal Summon” and the level range of the monster would be from level 1 to level 4.
Your opponent sacrifices 1 monster from the monster zone and places another monster from their hand to the same monster zone in face-up attack position. What is this mechanic called and what level range should the new monster be in?
This mechanic is called a “Tribute Summon” and the level of the monster should be level 5 or level 6.
Your opponent uses a spell card that allows them to play a monster from their graveyard. What is this mechanic called and which position can the monster be summoned in?
Be sure to specify face-up or face-down
This mechanic is called a “Special Summon” and the monster can be played in face-up attack or face-up defense.
Your opponent plays a monster card from their hand in face-up defense position. What is this mechanic called and what level should the monster be in? Assume no effects are used in this scenario

1 monster is needed for the tribute.
What is the highest level monster you can typically Normal Summon or Set without needing a tribute?
