Communism
A political ideology that believes in having a classless and equal society, where everyone has access to the same opportunities and there’s collective ownership
Capitalism
A system where private individuals and businesses own all rights to production of their products as long as they make a profit and are sold on the market
Republicanism
A political ideology that emphasises the protection of individual liberties and states that the power of the government comes from the citizens so they should be involved in decision making
Democrats
A liberal, centrist to centre-left political party in the USA that advocate for a more equal and just society through government action
Executive Office of the President (EXOP)
A branch of the federal government that is made up of people who are responsible for enforcing laws passed by congress as well as supporting the president
Executive Orders
A method of enacting policies and exercising authority that the President can use without immediate legislative approval e.g. Executive Order 9981 created to desegregate the military
Unconstitutional
Actions or laws that don’t comply with the US constitution and its amendments - constitution is the supreme law in the United States that say what the power of the government is and guarantees basic rights to its citizens
Separation of Powers
The division of the governments responsibilities into different branches: the judicial, the Supreme Court; the executive, the president; and the legislative, congress
Congress
The national parliament which functions as the legislative branch of the US federal government - it’s made up of two chambers: House of Representatives and senate
Federalism
A system where power is divided between a federal/central government and other local governments that are in different states to tailor to the needs of an area
Partisanship
A loyalty that is given to a specific political party which leads to a biased support of its policies and candidates - this often ends with an unwillingness to compromise with other beliefs and perspectives
Domestic policy
Policies made by the US government that are created to address issues and challenges faced by the people in the US to keep law and order
Liberalism
A political ideology that emphasises individual rights, freedom and equality before the law
Counter-culture
A movement or campaign that opposes the main values within society which is created if there are political issues or injustices e.g. the feminist movement
Conservative
An individual or a party who hold more traditional beliefs like a limited government, traditional family values and a national security e.g. Republican Party
