Summative Friday 8/23 Flashcards
Cells
Smallest units of all living things
Named by Robert Hooke who saw the “cells” or rooms of cork in a microscope
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid
Located in the nucleus of eukaryotic cell and unbound in the prokaryotic cell
Contains genetic material pass from adult to offspring during reproduction
Unicellular
One-celled organism; prokaryote and some eukaryotes
Bacteria, Amoeba
Multicellular
Complex organism with many cells; eukaryotes
animals, plants, fungi, and some protists
Specialized cells
Cells in multicellular organisms with specific functions like nerve, heart, muscle, and skin cells
Metabolism
process that occurs through chemical changes to produce energy for the cells of organisms (living things) to function
Stimulus
Change in odor, sound, flavors, and light
Response
Reaction to a stimulus
Swat a fly
Raise your hand to respond
Helps all organisms survive and function
Development
When an organism changes from one stage to another
caterpillar to butterfly
Growth
When an organism gets larger
foot size
Asexual reproduction
involves only 1 parent
offspring are clones of the adult
example: the hydra budding off the adult
Sexual reproduction
involves 2 parents
offspring have characteristics of both parents
Autotroph
Get energy from photosynthesis and provide energy for consumers or heterotrophs
plants are examples of autotrophs
plants get energy directly from the sun
Heterotroph
Organisms that get their energy indirectly from the sun
Heterotrophs depend on autotrophs for energy
Prokaryote
single celled, simple organism
no bound nucleus
example; bacteria
