Summation Flashcards

1
Q

What is summation

A

When the effects of neurotransmitters released from many neurones is added together, makes it more likely post synaptic membrane will be excited and generate an action potential

Q

What is spatial summation

A

When two or more presynaptic neurones release their neurotransmitters at the same time into the same post synaptic neurone, the small amount of NTs released from each of these neurones can be enough altogether to reach threshold and trigger an AP

Q

What is temporal summation

A

When two or more nerve impulses arrive in quick succession from the same presynaptic neurone, makes AP more likely because more NT released into synaptic cleft
