Summary of the RotNE?
It was a plot to marry MQS to the Duke of Norfolk. It was initially supported by the Earl of Leicester and other Protestant nobles. It was organised by the Earl of Northumberland (bc Liz had removed him from the Council of the North)
How did the RotNE end?
The rebels quickly dispersed upon hearing that the Earl of Warwick was amassing troops in the South
Consequences of the RotNE?
450 implicated rebels were executed
Elizabeth confiscated land and restored the Council of the North (appointing a Puritan leader)

Summary of the Essex rebellion?
Robert Devereux resented the influence of Robert Cecil. He was also bitter because Elizabeth had placed him under house arrest and deprived him of his positions, wealth and income, due to his disastrous handling of rebellion in Ireland
Along with 140 followers, he attempted to seize London, the Tower the and the royal court.
How did the Essex rebellion end?
He amassed no support (Londoners were reluctant to join him as Elizabeth had sent royal heralds into the city proclaiming Essex to be a traitor)
He was forced to surrender and was arrested along with 5 of his supporters

It was a period of instability resulting from poor harvests in the 1590s. Rebels were roused by poverty and class based anger.
They made seditious speeches and hoped to seize weapons to march on London

Elizabeth used torture and military force to put down the rebellion
5 men were executed for treason

A large food riot broke out in Kent in 1596 as local men attacked the wagons of merchants carrying food
