Summary of Clan Labs

A

There are three processes or stages relating to Clan Labs:
* Extraction
* Conversion, and
* Synthesis.
All three processes or stages of Clan Labs can be found at one Clan Lab site, but this may not always be the case.
Clan Labs are volatile and dangerous, and they contain both chemical and physical hazards. You must be aware of these hazards and employ the relevant safety procedures to minimise the risk to staff and members of the public.
When dealing with a Clan Lab, staff safety and the safety of the public is paramount. Collection of evidence is a secondary concern.
There are two types of Clan Lab investigations:
* unplanned entry and
* planned entry.
A planned entry Clan Lab investigation is the preferred method for dealing with a Clan Lab. However in the event of an unplanned entry Clan Lab the aim is to rapidly convert the unplanned entry into a planned response with appropriate structure and procedures.
All children and young persons living under conditions found in Clan Labs are considered to be in imminent danger. Immediate actions must be taken to remove the child or young person from the Clan Lab environment to ensure their safety and well-being.
Emergency powers for dealing with Clan Labs are contained in s103, and ss136 to 137 of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996.
